♦ In nova lux, Janusz Hereźniak, Kazimiera Zawistowicz – Adamska, Wacław Piotrowski, Stanisław Pączka
curator: Tomasz Ferenc
The 75th anniversary of the establishment of the University of Lodz became the pretext for preparing this exhibition. During prepartions we have discovered that among the academic staff of our university many of them in their research practices used photographic recordings. Among them Professor Kazimiera Zawistowicz – Adamska should be mentioned as first. She immortalized the pre-war Polish village, thus becoming one of the precursors of visual ethnography in Poland. In scientific research, photos were also taken by sociologist Wacław Piotrowski, who was documenting, among others, workers’ buildings in Łódź. The closest to the world of art was Prof. Janusz Hereźniak, who was not only an outstanding geobotanist, but also a member of the Łódź branch of the Union of Polish Art Photographers. The collections of photographs taken by geographer and professor Stanisław Pączka turned out to be equally unique. The slides deposited in the archives of the University of Lodz discovered not only a traveler, but also a great photographer. The last part of the exhibition is dedicated to photographers documenting the work of archaeologists from our University. This technically brilliant photographs taken sometimes even 50 years ago have a disturbingly modern face in terms of form. Five exhibitions have been prepared for two main purposes. First of all, we want to remind outstanding researchers from Łódź, which represents various scientific disciplines. Secondly, we want to show how intriguing these photographs are, how interesting points of view they reflect and how much they can discover today. Our search was also meant to show these archival materials in a new context, in new formats, in a new light. In nova lux.

Brave Boy Studio (Jan Kazimierz Barnaś i Wojtek Kamerys), Returns: Setomaa
Galeria Ogrodowa8, ul. Ogrodowa 8
The life of the Seto people goes on slowly. They live far from civilization, surrounded by forests and lakes. The rush of the modern world is not known to them or they have forgotten about it long time ago. Years later, more residents return home. They often led a prosperous life among the Estonian cultural, business and political elite. However, is it possible to live away from your own paternity, the land of your ancestors? Is it possible to live with the feeling of abandoning your own nation?
It is difficult to define what could be the main element influencing a cultural memory. It is rather a set of behaviors used by parents, guardians, towards children. A certain mysticality of their traditions, beliefs, celebrations of days significant for the community, leaves a mark on Seto. An important element of their identity is the land of their ancestors, which somehow influences them. Seto’s tradition and culture, cultivated by the community, is rooted deeply in an archaic tribal tradition.

Collection. Typology. Transformation. Students of Film Art Organization Department PWSFTviT in Lodz and professor Izabela Łapińska
Galeria Stróżówka Centrum Kultury Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego, 11 Skłodowskiej-Curie Street
Exhibition of works by students of Film Art Organization Department PWSFTviT in Lodz, realized during the “Fotografika” course under the supervision of prof. dr hab. Izabela Łapińska. The exhibition reaches for a “collection” of student works from the Faculty’s archives and shows “collections” as a topic interpreted by students during exercises. The photography of the course teacher closes the collection of students’ works. The first interpretative approach is a reference to the Düsseldorf school of typology from photographs by Hilla and Bernd Becher. The second is a form of transformation of an object – item – thing.
