The Artistic Schools Review is a project addressed to students of art schools in Poland. During the review, two exhibitions will be held, with nine Polish art schools invited to participate:  Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk, Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Katowice, JJan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, The Strzemiński Academy of Fine Arts Łódź, Magdalena Abakanowicz University of the Arts Poznan, Academy of Art in Szczecin, Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, The Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Art and Design in Wroclaw, Lodz Film School.

The schools will chose works which they want to show as current and interesting. The selection will outline some common themes among the young generation and reflect the related phenomena. It can also become a touchstone of the young generation’s fascinations, and at the same time reveal the condition of those of the currently undertaken efforts in visual arts which have their roots in photography.

Each of the invited schools will be asked to choose from 2 to 9 individual student projects, out of which the curators of the Review will chose two projects per school to be displayed in Akademickie Centrum Designu and in the Kobro Gallery of the Strzemiński Academy of Fine Arts Łódź. The 18 shortlisted projects will be evaluated by the Jury comprising artists and curators from Poland and abroad.

In this year’s edition, the International Jury will grant the Award of the Rector of the Strzemiński Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź. The winner of the Audience Award will be determined following an online poll held over the period in which the exhibitions of the 3rd Artistic Schools Review are displayed. The winner’s works will be shown during the Fotofestiwal 2025 as an individual exhibition.

The Review continues the tradition of a once cyclical Fotofestiwal exhibition, the Photographic Factory – International Schools Review, organised between 2003 and 2011 in Łódź. It used to be one of the signature parts of Fotofestiwal – a platform where students and teachers of schools in in Poland and abroad could share their achievements and effects of their work related to photography. It was also an opportunity for young artists to debut and gain invaluable experience in their artistic and career-related pursuits.

The Artistic Schools Review is cyclically organised by The Strzemiński Academy of Fine Arts Łódź in collaboration with Fotofestiwal. This year’s edition returns to all the original objectives and for the third time presents the best works by students of Polish art schools.

Akademickie Centrum Designu (Academic Design Center), Księży Młyn 13/15

DID YOU KNOW that the Academic Design Center is located in the former school at the Karol Scheibler’s factory?

Karol Scheibler was the most powerful factory owner in Łódź; he opened his first factory in Księży Młyn in 1855 and developed his business empire there over the following years. He created a “town in a town”, providing his workers with all the necessaries. Those included “famuły” (a whole estate of worker’s houses), the largest factory in that part of Europe, stores, hospitals and a school. The latter was for educating the workers’ children, who later became the next generation of factory employees. The school was developed over the years, and starting from 1 September 1976 it became the Complex of Economic Schools No. 2.  Since 2021, the Academic Design Center of the Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź is located here.
