Friday, which means Photo-Match, more openings, Night of Photography at the Old Market Square and a party at Casablanca
Friday! The second opening day of the Fotofestival and just as rich in events as the first day. The program includes public presentations of photographic institutions and projects as part of Photo-Match, four vernissages and an evening at the Old Market Square together with Polowka – the Night of Photography: slideshows of the British Journal of Photography competition, Talents Futures 2024, PhMuseum and Krzysztof Ostrowski live. As icing on the cake, we propose a party at the legendary Casablanca.
On Friday we traverse Lodz from south to north. At 11:00 am we start at Art_Inkubator at Tymienieckiego 3 with Photo-Match, a completely different portfolio review. Join us for public presentations by 20 female photographers and 20 female experts from all over Europe. This is an unusual formula of portfolio review, created by the Fotofestiwal team and successfully implemented at other festivals, so it is worth coming, especially since admission is open to all interested. Photo-Match will last until 2 p.m. Presentations are invited to the theater hall.
Exhibitions openings on Friday
At 5 pm, we will move along the representative street of Lodz – Piotrkowska Street – to the Lodz Photographic Society (102 Piotrkowska Street), where the opening of the exhibition Naked by Magda Hueckel will take place. Naked is the premiere presentation of collages and spatial installation. In an act of rebellion, the artist cut up The Technique of Nude Photography – a two-volume photography textbook published in London in the 1950s – an example of the fetishizing, paternalistic and patriarchal male view of the female body in the visual arts.
At 6pm, we will arrive at 11 Włókiennicza Street to the Hilary Majewski Tenement House. Here as many as two exhibitions will open. Botanizerka is the first solo exhibition in Poland by prominent Lithuanian artist Dovilė Dagienė, dedicated to the memory of the Polish and Lithuanian Jews murdered in Ponary and the story of the Holocaust survivor associated with Vilnius and Lodz, Prof. Jakub Mowszowicz, who initiated the creation of the Lodz Botanical Garden in 1946. In turn, Good Grief is the first exhibition after a long break by Przemek Dzienis, an artist associated with Fotofestiwal and Lodz.It is a personal, even intimate journey and a reflection on passing memories, records in the memory of the artist, who is known to the public not only for his photographs, but also for his music videos awarded Fryderyk awards and advertisements honored with the KTR award. Although the exhibition will feature photographs, the main medium Dzienis uses is the object.
At 7:30 pm we will arrive at the renovated Old Market Square, where we will stay until the end of the day. We have prepared three different events for you.
The first is the opening of the exhibition by Lukasz Rusznica When You Look Me In The Eyes Twice, I’ll Spread My Lips Or Clench My Fists / Photos From IPN Archives. Did you know that the Archive of the Institute of National Remembrance stores nearly 40 million photographs? There you will find photos of matters important to Polish history, as well as evidence of the banality of human actions, small crimes or insubordination. This exhibition is another attempt to ask questions about history, memory and our past.
Night of Photography
Then, at 9:30 p.m., Polowka in the Old Market – Night of Photography will begin – and a unique show of photographs from around the world selected by the prestigious British Journal of Photography. The show titled Portrait of Humanity will be a journey through 23 countries and 6 continents with live music (Krzysztof Ostrowski live).
We will also see photographs from Lodz archives and projects of Talent Futures 2024, i.e. five artistic people selected by Fotofestiwal to promote their work. They are: Grzegorz Wełnicki (PL), Karolina Gembara (PL), Maria Guțu (MD), Michalina Kacperak (PL), Mykhaylo Palinchak (UA).
At the end of the day, it was time to stretch the body and have an unforgettable Night in Casablanca. The iconic Lodz venue will serve herring, and DJ Lesu will play.
See you there!
