Exhibition opening: Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz, MULTIPLE PORTRAIT
Photography, like writing, was a field of Witkacy’s creative activity which accompanied him throughout his adult life. At the end of the 1990s, he wrote his first dramatic works and philosophical essays that can be treated as youthful manifestos. The metaphysical mystery of Being as a whole, as the artist writes, and the psychophysical Individual Beings immersed in it, emerges as the ultimate motivation for all creative endeavors. Around 1900, the first photographic series were also created, which he continued in many ways until the end of the 1930s. Early creativity focuses on the awareness of the image of the world around it and the psychological studies of the portrayed people. in a way, an image of the consciousness of a mature creator. In this case, the recording of the image is a secondary activity, a purely technical operation, usually done by the artist’s friends. The exhibition will show selected series from both periods of creativity, about 70 photographs. they come from the collection of the Signum Foundation and private collection.
