Exhibition opening: Iacopo Pasqui, DER ENGEL
“Der Engel” is a work realised during the artistic residency for Fotofestiwal in Łódź, inspired by Wim Wenders’ film “Wings of desire” and Peter Handke’s poem “Invocation of the World”. It is therefore a work about the city of Łódź and the figure of an angel, not as a religious figure, but as an entity that is really present in our lives. My first time in Poland, I had very special feelings: I felt at home, but I wasn’t at home, I found myself in a context, albeit European, that was very different from my own and not only culturally. I wanted to photograph everything, but I couldn’t; I thought I wanted to be an angel, to photograph without being seen, to really listen to the thoughts of the people around me and to really get to the bottom of everything I was portraying. Everything was new, different, I felt like I was living and seeing that context as if it was a new world, a new life, as if everything was for the first time. The series was conceived as a de-construction of the film. I was recording audio tracks and writing down thoughts about the city and its history and about contemporary Poland, imagining them as really coming from the people I portrayed.
