Holding on to Life (1985-2009)
Since the beginning of photography, people have carried with them pictures of their beloved ones – in the past, it was a passport photo in a wallet, now, more likely, an image on a mobile phone. In conflict areas, the tenderness with which these photos are shown to strangers reflects the years of absence, the pain of loss, the life and love that are gone. Only the memory and the photo remain. These photos were all taken in the course of my work in war torn regions of the world.
