We don’t know what photography is, but we do know that it can be anything we want it to be.We often recognize its familiar nature in non-obvious, surprising forms. After saying goodbye to the modernist paradigm of the medium, photography underwent a double revolution. Detached from the need to imitate nature, thanks to new digital technologies and incorporated into the field of art, it has to search for a new identity – as happened with the visual arts at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. This multifaceted metamorphosis is underway. Contemporary artists face the task of reinventing photography. Just like inventors and visionaries from two hundred years ago, combining technologies, imaging practices and optical devices into a whole, later called photography – so today the dispersed elements of the old medium and new phenomena and technologies combine to form a post-photographic universe. They are not permanent compounds and durable, they do not provide a solid support in tradition and authority. Dispersed, non-hierarchical and unstable structures emerge to form ad hoc centres. Today, the really important things are happening on the periphery, in the liminal areas. These phenomena can be seen as anomalies that cannot be placed within the framework of the old theory of photography. However, their authentic, photographic nature prompts a theoretical revision. New photography emerges from post-photographic experiments and discussions, and uncertainty is its inherent feature.
