“If you find your life tangled up with somebody else’s life for no very logical reasons,” writes Bokonon, “that person may be a member of your karass”
Cat’s Cradle, Kurt Vonnegut
Karasses and Granfallons is a multimedia story about various ways in which the concept of community can be understood. Over the last few months, community has become a real experience for all of us, redefining the existing divisions and creating new ones. Fear, which used to be an isolating and excluding force, has become a trigger for action and, at the same time, for unity, openness and sharing. In their projects, students of the Film School in Łódź ask questions about what modern communities are based on, what they are created of, and which phenomena accompany the processes of connecting as opposed to excluding. What conditions have to be met so that we could belong somewhere? How strong are our social positions? How do we feel about the communities that exclude us and what is the power of acceptance? Are there any algorithms that could do it for us? Do we have to be aware of our participation in a community?
The authors study in what way community activities create the reality and how they influence the reception of that reality. They construct and deconstruct. They produce works of art, engage the unaware participants in it, and offer a chance to create a post-factum community. In their poetic stories, they wonder which myths and ideas influence the connections and creation of social bonds. They also examine our heritage written down in songs, the power of tradition and music that bring people of different generations together. Karasses and Granfallons reflect on the stability or momentariness of our bonds and communities we belong to. Do we live in the times of crisis of community bonds or it is quite the opposite?
