In recent decades, photography has undergone both revolutions in terms of its ontological status – as this is how the transition from analogue to digital photography and the emergence of new genres (such as the “new documentary”) should be understood – and turns towards various intermedia and multimedia activities. Today, photography increasingly often steps beyond its traditional two-dimensional boundaries. This is manifested in the presentation formats as well as in the strategies employed to create the image itself. It also happens more and more frequently that the photographic context does not necessarily lead to the creation of a traditional photographic work. The concept of expanded photography – as a kind of borrowing from the avant-garde film tradition – corresponds well with the currently diagnosed trends, as it reflects the process of photography’s turning towards other arts, its transgression that occurs through dialogue with other media. This term brings forth the emerging new trends in this field and also helps explain those phenomena in which photography departs from its traditional, long-established form. This discussion is significant from many points of view: individual artistic strategies, research activities, creative and commercial practices, and teaching strategies in educational institutions. The currently observed transformations are largely associated with the development of new audio-visual, immersive, generative, and artificial intelligence technologies. How do technological developments affect the contemporary way of seeing the world, and how does traditional photography enter into dialogue with new technologies? How can this dialogue affect the future of photographers and the methods of teaching this art? On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Photography specialization, the Lodz Film School invites you to its premises. We will present works that are the result of current creative and research pursuits, works in progress: generative and audio-visual installations, as well as those related to generative artificial intelligence. The exhibition will be accompanied by recorded audio-visual performances: live intermedia actions, concert visuals, as well as examples of generative granular editing.
