Discussion panel – Three decades of change in photography
Free entrance
Language: Polish
The last 30 years have been a period of immense cultural change. On the one hand, it may seem rather obvious, but on the other hand, it is worth reflecting on whether we have indeed attached sufficient importance to that, considering the case of photography and its further development. In 1978, Steve Sasson, an engineer associated with Kodak, patented the world’s first digital photo camera. His project was seen as nothing but a curiosity and has never become popular. Neither has the inventor himself – he has not come down in history and is still anonymous to many of us. However, the very idea has turned out to be just too attractive to wither. Let us remember, though, that the civilisational revolutions that have influenced photography so much are not limited to the development of new methods to record the reality. What has also been important here is change in the scope and range of transmitting visual information and the stable and strong role of the mass media. Political, ethical, and social factors change the nature of artistic practice significantly. The discussion will be held in a group of photography theoreticians and practitioners and it will be related to the contemporary ways in which photography is presented and transformed. What is the current status of digital books? Why are photo books still important to us? And then, the key question of how we define the modern-day framework and boundaries of photography as the medium and what artistic practices affect and reorient it. Join us in this reflection.
