Get ready to start – this Wednesday brings an unique overview of what’s happening in Japan, Nigeria, Italy, Palestine and in the past and present of Lodz.

The festival hasn’t officially opened yet, and there’s already so much going on that you don’t want to miss. This Wednesday we invite you to 2 openings, an online streaming of one of the most anticipated encounters in Poland, and a conversation with a photographer who has visited Japan, Nigeria, Italy and India to explore a unique social phenomenon.

5:00 PM, Gabor Maté lecture – Reflections on Trauma, Individual and Collective: Palestine and Zionism

One of the most anticipated events in Poland this year, taking place at the festival centre, will be recorded and made available live online thanks to the University of Lodz. On Wednesday at 17:00, Gabor Maté – a world-renowned physician, author and one of the more prominent voices in the field of trauma, addiction and mental health – will give a lecture on Reflections on Individual and Collective Trauma: Palestine and Zionism. Anyone who was unable to register for the meeting will be able to watch it broadcast live, on the University of Lodz’s Youtube channel during the event.

6:00 PM, Exhibition Opening: There’s More to Life Than Work at the Museum of the City of Łódź

This exhibition is created from hundreds of archival photographs of Łódź residents – not only from the textile factories associated with this city, but also from kitchens, pharmacies, sewers, hospitals, offices, and construction sites. The second axis consists of private photos – neither as trivial nor as innocent as they might seem at first glance.

6:30 PM, Meeting with Niccolò Rastrelli at the Center for Comics and Interactive Narrative in English

What connects people in Japan, Nigeria, Italy, and India? And what do families look like when the father occasionally transforms into Sub-Zero or a manga character? You’ll be able to ask these questions to the author of one of the Fotofestiwal exhibitions, who has been documenting the global phenomenon of cosplay for years – in unusual contexts that begin to tell us more about ourselves than about the subjects of the photographs. The meeting will be moderated by Joanna Birek, a long-time organizer of the The International Festival of Comics and Games, who will expand the conversation also to the Polish scene.
