Meeting with Gabor Maté – Reflections on Trauma, Individual and Collective: Palestine and Zionism
Reflections on Trauma, Individual and Collective: Palestine and Zionism. Narratives of trauma influence human beings and inflect history. They can either obscure or clarify our view of reality, from Europe to the Middle East and globally.
Lecture and meeting with Gabor Maté.
Gabor Maté – world-renowned physician, author and one of the more outspoken voices in the field of trauma, addiction and mental health. Gabor Maté is known for his holistic approach to health. He gives lectures and workshops all over the world, working with prisoners, addicted persons and mental health professionals, among others. His speeches capture the attention of millions of listeners. Gabor Maté combines medicine, psychology and neuroscience, emphasising that addictions, autoimmune diseases and mental disorders often have roots in unprocessed trauma. Gabor’s family history was a key influence on his later interest in trauma and its effects. As a Holocaust survivor growing up in a family scarred by war, he turned his career path towards understanding human suffering and providing help.
Gabor Maté is recognised as one of the more outspoken voices in support of Palestinian rights. His voice, as a person of Jewish descent and a Holocaust survivor, is particularly relevant to the debate. The meeting will focus on the ongoing genocide in Gaza, the role of interpersonal empathy in healing collective wounds, as well as Maté’s involvement in trauma therapy in the West Bank in Palestine and his personal perspective as a Shoah survivor. During the meetings, he will talk about the impact of his own experiences on understanding generational trauma and the need for solidarity with the persecuted as a moral obligation in the face of the ongoing genocide in Gaza. Event participants will learn more about his therapeutic work in the West Bank, where he has helped victims of PTSD. Maté will explain why, despite criticism, he does not give up speaking out for the rights of Palestinians. The meeting will be moderated by Krzysztof Candrowicz, sociologist, curator, cultural animator and member of the Fotofestiwal collective in Lodz.
