COMMUNITY
Fotofestiwal 9-26.6.22
When we started our work on the Fotofestiwal program in August last year, the emotional load of the word COMMUNITY was different than it is today. After Russia’s unjustified criminal attack on Ukraine, we would like to believe that it is the “community” that will allow us to survive this crisis.
Community gives us the sense of identity and belonging, adds meaning and creates the social foundations. In the everchanging modernity of the 21st century, we look for its roots more and more frequently and attempt to satisfy the need for actual relations, bonds in various ways. The idea of the community is a point of reference for the curators, artists and activists whom we invited to create the program of exhibitions and events of this year’s Fotofestiwal. We ask questions about the agency of art. We wonder what is utopian and what is a real possibility in the search for an ideal community? What voices are missing in the narratives of our communities? Is it possible to rise above the anthropocentric model of community and create real interspecies communities that take into account the needs of animals and the environment? And, finally, how to create a community today based on respect for diversity?
Fotofestiwal has been created in the spirit of cooperation for 21 years now. In addition to over 40 exhibitions, the program will also include a number of events created for and with the inhabitants of our closest communities. We ourselves have been operating in a democratic, horizontal structure for several years and we hope that these communities will save us from the anachronistic, patriarchal model of the world.
