Some people said he was crazy, others called him a genius. He used to keep a lion in his apartment where he hosted roaring dinner parties for the bohemian art world of Vilnius that inspired wild (and usually true) stories circulating around town. His charisma was inspiring, his photographs documenting the reality of the Soviet Republic’s countries were as excellent as their counterparts taken on the other side of the Iron Curtain. If only Vitus Luckus hadn’t been born in the communist era, he surely would have gained a well-deserved international recognition as one of the greatest photographers in history. However, the Soviet authorities stood in the way of his exhibitions, even though he was the most successful commercial photographer in the country. With a vast amount of archive material, fellow photographers, friends and his wife Tatyana we look back on tumultuous life of Vitus Luckus. Special screening is organized in collaboration with the Lithuanian Center in Warsaw.

Instant Dreams is a cinematic essayistic quest for the secret of Polaroid instant film and its magic appeal rather than the chronicle of its glory years. Back in the day, the technology involved in the Polaroid film was always underrated despite its ubiquity and world dominance. The director takes us on a journey into the by-gone era of photography. The experience will be investigated on the basis of several characters: a Polaroid artist, the author of the Polaroid bible, the chemist who tries to unravel the Polaroid formula and the inventor of Polaroid Instant Lab which you can use to print your iPhone photos as a Polaroid. He also poses the question: why do we, humans who are always dreaming of perfection, have such an obsession with the imperfect?

Film screening heralds the July film festival organized by one of Fotofestiwal’s partners- the National Centre for Film Culture in EC1 Łódź.

Agnès Varda, an acclaimed photographer and the award-winning director of the French New Wave, and JR, a professional photographer, graffiti artist and muralist, partake in a special art project. She is almost 90 years old. He is only 33. She used to work with Jean Luc-Godard, he paints epic-size murals all over the world. Nevertheless, Varda and JR share a lifelong passion for images and how they are created or displayed. Varda expresses herself through cinema. JR opts for outdoor displays of his photographs.

Together they travel around France in JR’s old customized photo truck equipped with the photobooth, taking instant photographs of locals and printing them out in large format. This enchanting documentary/ road movie captures the deep rural areas of France that have fallen into ruin due to the technological advances. It’s a celebration of life and pleasure one derives from the connection they form with another human being. Despite their age-difference, friendship develops between two kindred spirits, between two individuals sharing a similar outlook on art and life.

Film screening is organized in collaboration with Transatlantyk Festival in Łódź. The film featured in our partner’s programme will be screened again on July, 13- 20, 2018. For more information, click here: www.transatlantyk.org
