“Visual Storytelling & Long-term Documentary Photography Projects”

This intensive four-day workshop will focus on how to develop and manage long-term documentary photography projects. Workshop tutor Alixandra Fazzina will guide participants through the complexities and structures of documenting transition that can shape the photographer’s own visual storytelling.

The workshop will include in-depth group discussions to encourage participants to think about stories that can be both engaging, yet up-close, and told with great sensitivity. Importantly, Alixandra will address the intricacies and ethical complexities of putting other people’s lives into pictures. The workshop will also provide participants with group portfolio reviews and editing sessions to help them shape impactful and innovative documentary photo projects.


  • Basic experience in photography (especially photojournalism and documentary photography)
  • English fluency (the workshop will be conducted in English)
  • Good technical understanding of your camera equipment

To Apply:

  • Complete the Application Form, including your motivation (300 words maximum), work experience (150 words maximum) & education experience (150 words maximum)
  • The form will also prompt you to submit an image portfolio (preferably one pdf file) which must include the following:
    • At least one photo story (minimum 8 images, maximum 20 images)
    • No more than 8 single images (images which are not part of a photo story)
    • All images should be accompanied by a concise caption
    • For any photo story, please include a title and brief introduction


Alixandra Fazzina (UK, 1974) is a photographer whose work focuses on under-reported conflicts and the often forgotten humanitarian consequences of war. When studying Fine Art, she began her career as a war artist in Bosnia. Since then, she has worked independently as a photojournalist throughout Eastern Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia. In 2010 Alixandra was recognized as the winner of the UNHCR Nansen Refugee Award for her fearless and tireless dedication to humanitarian photography throughout her career. Alixandra is the author of A Million Shillings – Escape From Somalia (Trolley), which follows the often deadly journey on people smuggling routes from the Horn of Africa. Her long-term project The Flowers of Afghanistan documents the journeys of Afghan children seeking refuge in Europe.

In addition to her photography and writing, Alixandra has worked as a researcher and producer for broadcast media and is a regular contributor for the radio.

Alixandra regularly teaches masterclasses and workshops around the world for organisations that have included World Press Photo, Reporters Without Borders and The Royal Photographic Society. She lectures in art, photography and media at photography and literature festivals and on under and post-graduate programmes at universities.

Alixandra is currently based in London.

The reservation of the spot will be valid upon receiving the payment and payment confirmation in 3 working days.

In case of cancellation of the workshop, the paid amount will be returned to the participant.
