Nur-e jan

The exhibition encompasses a selection of photos from the “Nur-e jan” series. The series is the outcome of four journeys to Iran – from Teheran to the eastern parts of Sistan and Baluchestan, and from Masshad in the north to the Persian Gulf in the south.

All the photos are traditionally made on a black and white negative and copied by hand in a traditional chemical darkroom.

„Nur-e jan” is a Persian expression that literally means “the light of a soul”. It is a borrowing from the Sufi terminology. In Sufism, a mystical Islamic ideology, Nur-e jan equals the light of life. Iranian Sufism identifies light with purity, the beginning of unity and the source of the one and only love.
